Discussion Starter #1
Heres the story. I got a new starter from RobbMc in Nevada. I got a new Competition Engeneering midplate kit, came with the SFI flexplate. The new starter bolted up pretty and worked great (kinda) for about 40 starts and then ate the gear. Got another gear and replaced it. Less than 20 starts later ate another gear. We suspected for some reason the gear was not meshing far enough into the flexplate (in relation to the center of teh crank). We were right. Robb told me today we had about .50 backlash and needed max .20 closer to .10. He told me his starter uses a 9 tooth stock style gear and location of the gear. He said I need one of the gear reduction starters FORD (10 tooth) made in the 90's for the 460's in trucks, or a Nipendenso type stater from Power Master. I called my local FORD dealer (this has always been a mistake in the past) and they tell me they do not know anything about a FORD gear reduction starter. They tell me if I can get a part# they can help me.

Here's my plea for help:

1) does someone have one of these FORD starters hanging around I can buy?

2) Does anyone have a part # so I can try and get one in one week from my FORD dealer?

3) Has anyone modified the Comp Eng plate to use a stock style starter?

4) Does anyone know exactly what I'm talking about and knows of a good aftermarket starter that will work with my aplication? It has been suggested to me I get a CVR starter, but I have not looked at one and researched the number of teeth on the gear.

I want to race the car for the last time on 11-1 and 11-2. Needless to say, I am in dire straits to get a starter quickly.

Thanks in advance for any help you can priovide.

Ken...

I just had an internal failure in my RobbMc starter yesteday.....I called around and was able to track down the application for the factory deal.

Its for a 95 Ford F250 w. 460 and Automatic.......i went down to the nearest Napa and picked one up.... Napa Reman Part #244-9260 Think it was $129!

I gotta say, i wish id known about this baby befor i bought the RobbMc.....If i wasn't the one to change it i wouldn't have believed its a diffrent starter. Starts my 14-1 545 the same or better then Robbs.
It looks alot like Robbs just not all blingy, and it isn't clockable.

Give it a shot!

I agree with Mike, you can usually find them at most parts stores... Myself, I'm using a stock Ford starter on my 13.6:1 521... Got 2 seasons on it, plus had it in my daily driver for about a year before that and not a problem... But, I also have the MSD Digital6 Plus which drops 20* of timing at the hit of the starter button... Nice knowing if I have a problem at the track, I can go to the local parts store and find a new one...
This ignition box was a good investment I think...

Go to your local parts store and get on for a 95 F250 W 460 autotrans, END OF PROBLEMS.

The one I use is a reman unit from ford, they had a couple in the old reman bin and were gonna toss them out.

Seems to be a lot of failures with those RobbMc.

Here's the update guys.

Got the new starter, a stock one for the 460 in 1995. It's a gear reduction with 10 tooth pinion gear. It worked great........for a second. This time the engine doesn't start right away, I think I flooded it, and it kicks back a couple of times. We discovered the selonoid on top was loose allowing the gear to pop in and out of the flexplate. Anyway, it broke 3 teeth off the SFI flexplate this time. The starter appears to be O.K. I said forget it this year and will winterize it this week. I have other things to do to it anyway. Well, I hope I get it finished before the bash and can make an appearance. Thanks everyone for your help.
