I just gotta share my stupidity to keep anyone from wandering down the same sorry road.
A few weeks ago I was looking for a problem that caused a slight "nose over" just past the 1/4 mile stripe. I pulled out the high side rev limit chip and put it in the glove box. On the next pass, I determined the issue was a fuel pump that needed freshened up. I fixed the fuel pump...all was well.
I never put the high side chip back in. In 35 years of racing this car, I have never broken a driveline part that EVER made the chip necessary anyway.
This weekend at a Div2 points race at Silver Dollar Raceway in Georgia, I decided to test a new throttle stop program for Super Gas that had me leaving at close to WFO. On the first pass the car shook the tires violently at took off for the center line. I clicked it off...and drove it back...noticing a slight vibration that I could not easily identify. It apparently damaged the 10 year-old ring and pinion when it shook the tires. I went up for another hit..and at about 60 ft..it shelled the gearset..when I tried to re-fire the 605...it sounded odd...
After downloading the Racepak...I found that the engine went exactly 9000 rpm when the gear broke!
I loaded the car...went to Summit..picked up a new 4.56 cog..and a bearing set...and made an all night thrash setting up a new rear end, and swapping the 514 BT engine in to the car.
I made it back to the track...just in time to MISS the last time session for the day.
End of story...first round Sunday AM...zombie driver...still fuzzzy..bad light..and got waxed by one of my best buddies.
I hope the 605 just has a few bent exhaust valves. I will check it out his weekend.
Moral of the story...don't be a dumb ***! It is no fun.

Licking the wounds...still sore from the thrash.

When my band snapped in the tranny I was damn sure glad it was there, the playback on the tach showed it make the gear change at 7200, pull down then instantly go to 7400 on the chip when it broke. Valvetrain is glad to lol.

Ask Blake about that chip.............

Dumb and Dumber

Jon,
I sure learned a lesson on this one.
The 605 is sure to eat some driveline components in this 3600++ lb car.
I just have to make sure to not do something that stupid again.
The thrash was a subliminal *** whippin' for myself.
One of my buddies made the comment.." if you were a REAL RACER.. you would take that thing home and fix it"
That was all it took...I was on my way home within the hour...
Silly thrash for no reason.
Punishment.
Better than being set in the corner.
Thanks!

Keith I did that about 2 years ago went to a race and broke a shift cable so happen to have a new one replaced it and everything checked out and went back great, Launched the car and 330 out I clicked 2nd gear and zing. I caught it.. but when I got back to the pits it went from 2 gear to neutral, Man those dang things can rev quick. I hit 8800 in a heart beat...

took it home after the race checked it n/p everything looked great

You know its funny you guys should mention rev limiters. We had the exact opposite thing happen and hopefully you can all just get a chuckle out of this. We were at Gateway with this brand new combo and at 800 feet it would go BANG out the exhaust and fall on its face. This was a shootout for a magazine and only the fastest time mattered. It did it on every run at about the same point on the track. We were all dumbfounded on what it could be. A week later while watching the video it hit me....................................... I run a digital 7 plus box and the burnout rev limiter is wired into the brake light switch. When I got twords the top end of the track I was covering the brake pedal and it was so sensitive that it was tripping the 3400 rpm burn out rev limiter. We still managed a 9.77 at 115mph though. Although after smacking myself and taking it to a different track we managed a 9.65 at 148. Wow did I feel stupid. :(

With the injection like you and I run I don't think the chip can stop it quick enough.

2 years ago in my dragster I had a 7200 chip. One night I totally grenaded the glide planetary about 80 ft out. The recall on the tach showed 8200 on the old cast crank
