Been running the very mild combo listed below for 20 care free years in my 68 Galaxie. The engine still runs great, uses no oil and still has 70psi cold 30psi hot oil pressure. Cranking compression a couple years ago was 210-220 (fresh was 230-240). Car is 4200lbs and runs high 12's but really is just a cruiser. I would like to see it run a 11.99. With the short block seeming in good condition I'm debating weather to just install a better cam and heads versus going through the whole thing. Question is will larger 2.190 / 1.76 valves clear the old school TRW L2443NF30 .400 dome piston? If I recall the piston is .018 below deck. I know clearance would need to be verified but is this even in the ballpark of clearing?


- 10.6'ish to 1 - 466 ci

- TRW L2443NF30 12.1cc dome piston

- stock 71 crank/rods arp studs top/bottom

- D3 heads (ex cleaned up)

-1.7 crane gold rollers

-218/224 @ .050 .530/.530 lift

-steath intake/1" open spacer

-Quickfuel/proform 750 DP - 77/86

-msd 6AL

-2" primary headers - 3" flowmaster

-c6 /2000 stal convertor

You will need about 70+ hp to get into the high 11's

Unless you properly port your D3's and get an appropriate cam in there I don't see it happening.

The Larger valves will work with the domed TRW pistons yes.


The only bolt on option for heads are the large chamber EDDY heads and they are really no better out of the box than nicely worked OEM castings. Worse is that they are hella expensive.


Flat tops
AFR's which are $500 less than the eddy heads.
Proper cam is an easy 600 hp

I was figuring needing an additional 80 for the goal, wasn't far off. I thought it was just me who thought the eddy's were stupid expensive for what they are. The larger valve question was because I have been keeping an eye out for a good used set of eddy's thinking that and and more cam would get me close. So based on your reply AFR's will not be a bolt on with these pistons?

No they would not be.

The valve notch location is between std and SCJ occupying a portion of the SCJ / P-51's large flat notch.
