I currently use the bench type valve spring testers, but I see folks using the "on engine" type that checks the spring tension while on the head. Is this method any better since it is giving a direct read of what the spring tension is on the head, or is my current method (bench tester) better?

Thanks,
James

I think the on head testers are meant to be a simple quick diagnostic tool. I see guys using them between rounds etc. just checking for bad springs etc. just like running the valves looking for big changes that might indicate something else going on in the engine.

If you want a real good read on the exact numbers on your springs stick with your bench tester. The on head deal is a quick and dirty deal which basically just tells you what you have on the seat.
