Given stated variables, which swap would you do???

  • 385 series into a "less commonly" swapped Fox Body

Think this is my first post on these "new" forums, since the change over. Anyway, tried searching and didn't really come up with anything. Is there any info out there on the various fox body weights?

Primarily for the 2 dr...
78-83 Fairmonts/Zephyrs/Futuras
80-88 T-Birds

As well as wagons...
78-83 Fairmonts/Zephyrs
83-86 LTDs/Marquis

Still have my 70 Mustang to get back to eventually, but looking into a street/strip car as of now. Of course would be dropping in a 385 series. Sort of got "stuck" with a 78 Nova 2 dr, that I didn't really want. I was going to use a caddy 500 & switch pitch 400, I have. However, aftermarket support for the caddy, is still crap, despite how much a few vendors try.

Also I haven't ruled out dropping a 385 series & my switch pitch 400 (12" converter) into it. Wouldn't be a difficult swap at all. If it upsets the Nova& GM crowd, all the better. :twisted: TIA.

Our Gray 83 T-Bird w/460 ...C6 combo weighs 3350 w/out the driver and without the front bumper. (just the cover) It does have Draglite wheels tho, but it has cast iron exhaust manifolds and water pump.

I have not taken out the carpet underlayment yet. That's worth 25-35 lbs.

My old 79 Fairmont surprised me the most. 460,C6, iron intake, iron exhaust and water pump with too heavy of motor mounts. Stripped interior. Only the driver's seat. Weighed 3090 lbs w/o driver.

Oh yes, I love those Switch Pitch 400's. I ran one for years in a 71 Buick GS and loved playing with it.

Thanks much for the info. Was trying to get a relative comparison weight-wise. Found info on the wheelbases. That's a real nice looking 83 T-Bird you have there. The sp 400 is from a Buick nailhead. Glad I waited on picking up a GM JW ultarbell.

This week or next, I'm going to take some engine compartment & under dash measurements of a Taurus/Sable for a rwd conversion. Wouldn't mind building a wagon. Just something a little different. I'll most likely just sell off all the Nova & caddy stuff for extra room and decide which body I'll start with.

You'll find that a Fox body with a 460 will weigh between 3,000 and 3600 lbs typically. The high-end cars weigh more than the econo cars, so your Fairmonts and early coupe Fox mustangs weigh the least while your T-birds, Lincolns etc weigh the most because of added bracing and sound deadening... And they are longer and wider too. You could probably strip a Fairmont, or Stang coupe and be at 2800 lbs pretty easily.

If you're going to 460 a Chevy.... At least do a Camaro, Vette or other prized GM classic. Putting a 460 in the late-70's smog era Nova would be a waist of a good engine in my opinioin.

Yes. I had some 1/4 inch aluminum plate and made 2 pcs (1/2 inch total) for all 4 bolt-down locations. I use an aftermarket manual steering with a solid shaft and set it up were I could lower the k-frame even more. (which I will have to do if I use a Performer RPM air gap manifold.)

My factory hood air duct work was trimmed to clear the 14 inch air cleaner. (barely)

I am very happy with the outcome. Enough room to put a nitrous Top Shot above the carb and a 1/2 inch spray bar under and the relays to wire it up as a 3 stage system. All while looking stock on the outside.

Next up.....Widened 16 in TC wheels and new (for 2007) Mickey Thompson 295-50-16 Drag Radials to complete the sleeper package.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. :!: The attached links helped as well as the pm I was sent.

Just have to do some measuring and make some decisions. Found the wheelbases, track widths, interior dimensions and weights, if I decide different from a Fox body. Still going to look into a fwd to rwd conversion. Prett sure I can make it work without measuring. Just going to have to look over some rules. Been out of drag racing for quite sometime now. I'm pretty close on the decision of which car, that as far as I know, no one has built before. Wife didn't look too plased, when I showed her the body style in stockform. She tried comparing it to my my mustang & nova. Oh well, it's only a feeling. It'll go away. :lol:

I've built more than a few conversion type vehicles in the past. Baring some major miracle with my back and spine injuries, this will probably be my last. So it has to be a little different and something worth all the effort & pain. :wink:

As far as your fwd to rwd conversion... I measured our 92 Taurus wagon years ago to see if I could build a 302 rwd wagon. There is plenty of room in the engine compartment. The trans tunnel will have to be enlarged. The spacing between the front strut towers is big enough to put a 460 and I was going to use a fox k-frame.

:D I figured the swap may have crossed someone's mind by now. I was looking online for empty engine compartments and did see a 92. Looks like room won't be an issue, like you said.

A fox type k-frame was exactly what I was thinking or just fabbing a coilover setup. That's if the upper & lower control arms I have laying around will work. I'll worry about it being front steer or rear steer after motor and tranny mock up. Probably will either be the (2nd gen) 92-95 or (3rd gen) 96-99. Hood clearance could be an issue with either. Now, really looking forward to unloading the Nova & all it's junk, to free up some room. :D
