What are NHRA/IHRA requirements for battery hold down in the trunk? With the metal bulkhead I assume that I don't need additional containment such as a box, but just a means to keep the battery from moving, but am not clear on the requirements. I previously ran with battery in stock location so this wasn't an issue.

Battery Holddown

They require two 3/8" diameter holddown studs minimum . No box if the trunk area is sealed from the drivers compartment by .024 steel or .032 aluminum. Positive side of the battery must be connected to the emergency electrical shut off switch. :D

Any requirements on how to attach the bolts?

Chris,

Thanks for the response. Are there any specifics on how the bolts are to be attached through the floor? Do they have to have a specific size washer to keep from pulling through, or cross strapped, or welded?

Battery Bolts

No they don't specify. Just use common sense & you will be ok. My battery boxes have a metal tab welded to the frame. I use 3/8" studs & attach with two nuts at the tab. Then I have a cross bar which slides over the studs to use as the battery hold down. Nothing fancy.

Battery

All these reqirements for trunk mounted batteries are correct,if the fuel cell is there too.If the fuel source is out side of the trunk just make sure its held down correctly.You need to get an Nhra or Ihra handbook to help you with these rules.

Fuel Cell In Trunk

Bob,

Fuel cell is also in the trunk so I had to have the bulkhead between the interior and trunk.

Battery hold down.

Here's a quote from techinspector1 who use to post on the old forum.

"The rules state that the battery should be secured to the frame or a crossmember, but in a unibody car, you must improvise. Go down to the hardware and get a 3 ft. stick of 3/8" Allthread, four 3/8" NC nuts, two 3/8" NC locknuts, two regular 3/8" flat washers, four large diameter 3/8" flat washers and a piece of steel flat stock 3/4" to 1" wide and long enough to reach across the width of the battery. Be careful when drilling through the floor, there might be a fuel tank down there. Use a nut and washer above and below the floor to sandwich the floor with your studs".

What I did on one car was weld a "halo" around the outside of where the battery was going to be. I used 1" flat steel and welded it to the floor all around. Them I welded 1/2" allthread to that. It passed tech at 2 different tracks with 3 or 4 different inspectors. It's probably stronger than washers as it covers more surface area. It also has the advantage of keeping the battery in one place without tearing the vent caps up if the holdown loosened up. And remember if you use allthread across the top, you can't have "j-hooks". The ends have to be welded shut.

Thanks for the info.

Everyone, thanks for the info.

This is a 1962 Fairlane so it is a unibody. However, the rear sub-rail goes under the area where I mounted the battery, so I made a U shaped bracket that goes under the rail, and then went with 3/8" all thread as ya'll suggested. I then made a top strap and bolted it down. The battery ain't going anywhere now.
