I was wondering what engine combos you were using to go high 5's in the 1/8 with. I figure when I build a 460 based engine I want to do it once and do it right. I would appreciate any advice. I was thinking stock block with a stroker kit, not sure which one yet. I would like to run the fms scj heads since they are affordable. I solid roller cam, glide with a transbrake, not sure on gears, yet. All would be going into a 72 maverick, with a mustang 2 front suspension. Street manners do not matter since it will be a drag race only car. I appreciate any advice

being a maverick im assuming race weight around 2800 lbs... to get high 5s in the 1/8th you only would need 700hp at 2800lbs and a stock block is fine for that range... id go a 552 (.060 over with 4.5" stroke) and nice custom solid roller cam

at what point does a stock 460 block start to fail usually. I know a 302 is a bomb at 500hp but have never heard of much problems with 460 blocks

I built a 514 in 1992. CJ block, iron CJ heads, alum. rods, reground stock crank, roller cam,Victor intake w/ an out-of-the-box 1050. It ran 5.90's in my 2800 lb 69 Mustang. Sold the engine in 2001 and have been doing freshen-ups for the new owner. Just tweaking on it through the years, it's now a 521 and went 5.82 a couple weeks ago in a 2800+ lb 73 Mustang. There is no telling how many hundreds of passes this engine has on it. I put almost a thousand passes on it the first three years I owned it.

The same engine went 5.60's in the 98 mustang in my avatar.

If you want to do it once and do it right, go ahead and get an aftermarket block, good crank and rods to start with.
