i am gonna do some work to my 86 f350 crewcab duaily
currently it has a 6.9 with a ats turbo
it is getting weak
i am gonna try to limp it throu the rest of the summer since we use it
to pull our 36ft trailer
so i am gonna do a transplant as soon as the season is done
i have been leaning twords a 7.3 older style without the electronics
and the stuff off my 6.9 can be used as parts
but i dont think i will put the turbo back on it
yea i know it gives me more power but it also gives me more headach
and i have been hearing the a 7.3 with out a turbo and some injector pump work
that they will out perform a 6.9 with a turbo?
i think with my 6.9 i can get around 17 mpg and 11 pulling a trailer
that isnt bad i dont think but of course i would like better but i can live with that
but than i have the upkeep of a diesel and so far my 6.9 has been nickly and dimming me alot
but it has 230,000 on it so i am not dissapoionted
and of course i have been thinking about an older 12 valve cummins
i have heard they make good power and good mpg but it is hard to find one cheap
but maybe it would be worth spending a bit more and make up for it in gas milage
and hope it last's a long time
or a 460
i have a few left over parts sitting on the shelf and it wouldnt cost me much of any thing to do a good tow build on it
460 stock bottom end new rings bearing's custom cam
f3te heads with minor clean up headers
but there goes the gas millage
but i wont have the up keep on it so maybe that would be a good choice?
i am shure some of ya have had a simailer dilima
i need opions and advice cause i am gonna start of a motor soon

i am leaning towards a 7.3 non turbo
it will bolt right in
but wonder if it will be a big improvment over the 6.9?
and will it be costly to maintain?

I would say use the 7.3, but use the turbo too. One of the service trucks I drove, an 88 F350 SD with 7.3 and 5 speed just was not stout at all, even though I had turned up the fuel press all I dared to. Threw a rod at 230,000. A racer friend had a 88 CCdually F350 with the 7.3, it too threw a rod. He bought an F250 that was totaled in a tornado near his home that had a 6.9 with the Banks turbo kit, installed it into the dually and it did a fine job pulling and fuel milage wise, better than the 7.3, but as stated, the 6.9 was puffed, the 7.3 was not.
As far as the Cummins, by the time you find one (if you find one), buy it PLUS the kit to install it, moneywise you would be better off trading for a Dodge. However this is just my opinion.

Man told me that a Dodge with a Cummins in it is like having a candy bar wrapped in ****. I aint no fan of a 5.9, we (Ryder) had thousands of them in the 90s in F700s and to me they wernt nowhere near the motor the 6.6 Ford was that it replaced. Again JMO.

IMO...................find a used 7.3 with low miles if possible and swap to the late model glow plug system. I'm running both a 7.3 (1 ton daully) and 6.9 (28ft motorhome)n/a's both towing the race car and not much dif betwwen them. Helped a buddy do a 5.9 swap years ago because he had the motor already and it wasn't a just a simple bolt in deal. If your going to build something fresh I'd just do the 6.9 again. nomatter what, a 4" exhaust, turn up the pump and advance it a little and if n/a build some kinda ram air and it should do the job. Or a guy could just build a 557 stump puller?

cost of ownership over the long run is a wash between gas and diesels
I would have to agree, it has been tons cheaper to keep my 460 running than what my folks pay to maintain their 7.3. the extra money paid for fuel will probably be paid out in oil changes and other expensive diesel maintenance over the next few years, not that the 7.3 is a bad motor, its great, but i'll take my big gas motors anyday for the price you pay for a diesel.

CUMMNINS!!!!

There are a couple of places up here in Montana that sell kits to put a cummins in what ever you want. I have had the Powerstrokes and could never get the milage that I get with my 01 Dodge Cummins 6spd. I will get you the info if you wish. But I would use the 94 to 98.5 12 valve as they are easier to ramp up the power. And the Cummins is "WAY" cheaper to maintain! I can buy a whole set of 250 hp injectors for a 3rd of a set of stock Stroker injectors? If you want to go to this web site www.autoworldmt.com and check out some of there work and they also have kit info on there. This is just my opinion, and the Cummins looks like it should have always been in a Ford!

nobody here was talkin about a powerstroke
IDI's are pretty cheap too. I've got a 7.3 IDI turbo. i love it. not the most powerful, however it does have more power than a stock early electronic diesels, as they make ~250-275hp depending on the turbo/setup, and it doesnt owe me anything. Unless you're planning on putting a ton of miles on this afterwards, the cummins swap will likely never pay for itself.

385 series Ford would be my vote, the best truck engines ever made. 472/500 Cadillac's make for a real impressive pulling engine too.
