I visited a local machinist's shop last week to check him and his place out. Seemed like a pretty nice shop. Flowbench, dyno, tons of race stuff in the shop. While we were discussing my engine rebuilt for my truck, He asked what cam do I plan to run. I was undecided at that point and told him Probably an off the shelf grind from comp. HE THEN tells me, "compcams are junk, I put three in a customers engine and they all three dropped lobes, I ordered a crane for the customer and his engine is still running today"....Then after hearing him talk smack about Ford's I was ready to scream obscenities at him and also ask him Why the hell HE PUT THREE CAMS in a customers engine that HE was building and wiped the lobes off?!!.....He tried to blame it on the Engine oil to break it in with!!
I asked the machinist knowing it to be a dumb question, "was the spring pressure too high for the hydraulic cam??...He said he installed the hyd. crane cam with around the same figures and its still running today.
So what is your opinion on letting this guy rebuild my engine?......I would think a machinist wouldn't have smoked down three cams in a row, kinda worried I'm at the wrong shop:confused:

yea, He's DEFINATELY a bowtie man! Maybe i'll bring it to him to dyno after I get it built elsewhere! This is where Harley Dave should come in;)

I agree, let someone else use him. I wouldn't use a machinist who insults a specific brand, be it Ford, Chevy or Mopar. And, I agree with you that admitting to wiping out three cams in a row is not the best recommendation.

Hey Smasher, I'm not sure where you were but I'd probably go somewhere else. I'm trying to think who around here has a dyno.. I can recommend a couple of good places but they're both out of town. PM me if your interested.

I've beat this horse many times, but I had bad luck with a Comp cam, and it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Had one of their cams wipe a lobe on me during break in. Used their break in policy to a T and still wiped it. Found out that there was a run of bad cores that they wouldn't admit to. They have some really good lobe profiles for the BBF though and seems to be better quality now than then. The Crane stuff seems OK but not really great as far as lobe profiles. IMHO this guy is a real knothead and I wouldn't let him assemble my lawn mower engine though. I'd go look for someone with Ford knowlege. This is the reason I studied engine assembly and now do my own.

x2 with schmitty, just based on your comments alone, i would have a hard time trusting this guy to fix a flat tire on my mountain bike;);) sounds like a potential hassel, do your homework and explore other options before committing to this shop with your investment:D JMHO

If he had admitted to wiping three cams over the past year I might consider him, but since it was three cams in the same engine I believe he may have a problem with attention to details. If he can't even make a flat tappet cam live, think of all the other areas he would probably not pay close enough attention to.

I never understood all the brand loyalty stuff. I've never heard an engine complain about what name is on its valve cover. All engines from all makes have their strong and weak points and as time has passed, more development has been done. I could understand if the guy was talking great about Ford stuff when you brought in a Ford engine (trying to "buddy up" with you). But it sounds like that wasn't the case.

I can't believe he likes Crane over a Comp..... I can't think of anybody that I know who's used a Crane flat tappet cam that didn't have it go flat.

Brand loyalty is something that I don't have a whole of respect for either. We work on all brands at our shop and I don't see why not. I agree with the above post in that there are strengths and weaknesses in all engine designs and you've got to take the good with the bad in whatever you choose. With that said I feel that Ford has the best big block design, Mopar the worst when it comes to a performance engine. As far as quality goes I think the Mopar is just fine I mean how many 440's have you ever seen that were truly worn out?

Dave, I have two 413 Chrysler industrial engines, and they never completely wear out. I will always give mopar credit for designing engines that are durable.

My machinist is a real cool guy and friend that races a SB Ford but say's he loves SB chevies because if it was'nt for them he would be out of business. His philosophy is about like Dave's that they all are good and all have strength and weeknesses.He does'nt have alot of experiance w/bbf's other than my engines ,so he ask's me lots of ?'s. And because I am a Member of 460.com. I can give him a good answer and he thinks I'am so so smart :p:D. I assemble my own engines,and find it very enjoyable.And that way after I Mic everything and make sure it's OK,if something goes wrong I can only blame myself.
But if I were you I would look around for a new machinist.:(

Personally I wouldn't use a Crane if they gave me the whole factory....

many years ago I raced 302 bosses and they (crane) sold me a complete roller setup. being that the Titanium retainers wre sort of new. I ordered the whole setup back in the late 70's it was $900. I built a nice 302 Boss put the cam in and set it up like they said, fired it sounded sweet...ran it for 30 minutes to let it break in the rings and took it to the track... first Pass @9200rpm all hell broke loose.. coasted through and engine was trashed so took it home and opened it up to find Retainer broke,:eek: come to find out they made a mistake and sent me the wrong set with my setup..I called them and the said we have a warranty program... I mentioned wqhat happened and they said it was out of warranty cuz I started the engine... so they warrantied the retainers and sent me 2 new aluminum retainers. Which was their fault cuz the sent the wrong ones the first time...

Oh let me tell you @9200rpm and an intake retainer breaks it makes a hell of a mess.......... I salvaged the headers, intake, 1 660 had to replace the base to the other. the valve covers and thats about the extent of it...


No More Crane for me EVER

Can't get Crane anyway since they're closed now. It's a moot point. Every company makes good products and they also make turds. Sometimes it's just a matter of luck, experience, or better yet someone else's experience that makes the difference.

If the guy said something like " I haven't good experiences with such and such a brand" I might consider still using him but if he talks down the brand of engine I brought him I'd run away.

well I'm kind of like crane as they made all the original valve train stuff for the C-460 heads when they first came out and it still works ,and I like their 7 degree posi-stop Titanium retainers and their valve springs seem to last alittle longer before they start going down hill
