I've always used straight 30W oil for break-in (most cam manufacturers suggest this). I've never lost a cam.

Absolutely. I run it in my PSD as well as the race car, and I'm going to start to put in my cars as well. Great oil at a reasonable cost.

I use straight 30 as per cam companies rec

I have used others too. 30 seems to work good. I have just been using the normal valvoline that you can get at wal mart. With a bottle of eos. If I am running over 300 psi open I only run the outer springs and then add them later. Big thing that I have found is to make sure the engine starts right away with out cranking it much. The cam isn't getting oil while cranking and I have seen that wipe some cams out. Prime the carb, make sure your dizzy is close to where it needs to be.

Been using Rotella 15W40 since 92 in all of my race engines. It's the only oil, short of synthetic, that I found will hold up to the temps without dropping pressure too much as the oil warms up.
