Of course ya'll heard the story about the guy ice fishing with his black Lab. They were sitting in the hut, and the guy got a fish and drug it up thru the hole, and the dog grabbed it, but it got away, and the dog dove down thru the hole after it. After a minute, the poor guy gave up hope of ever seeing his dog alive again, and walked out of the shack. All of a sudden the guys in the shack beside him burst out of their shack screaming in terror. The dog had came up through their hole, and sucked a great big gulp of air in as he surfaced. :D
I don't really believe a word of this one, but it sure makes a good story.

dfree383 , a boat in the sun shine at -40 with a 50 mph wind out of the North is cold!

Let me clarify my statment..... Sunshining, 75+ degrees, 10-15 mph "breeze" and a cooler full of your favorate Adult Beverage. The only ice involved is the stuff keeping the beverages cold.

We've got farm ponds our buffalo drink from and a few winters ago I was feeding hay and saw one go for a drink and slide. It plunged into the hole and never came up. The hole in the ice is near shore but it was on a steep bank. Dad and I will chop holes in the ice with an axe but always in shallow water near shore but sometimes the buffalo will make their own drinking holes in less safe areas like this one was. Anyway, I went straight home and got steel posts, woven wire, and a post pounder. I put up a quick fence around the hole to keep the animals from trying to drink there (stuck the posts in the ice). When the ice thawed a few months later there were 14 dead buffalo in there. I also went to a farm auction several years ago. The old guy that lived there went ice fishing on his pond and fell through. He was found only a few yards from shore dead. He'd used his lockback knife and arms to break a path from where he fell through to try to get to shore. He came so close but didn't quite make it. So the farm was sold. Gotta be careful!
