Ive got a 1981 Ford 460 that has been rebuilt. The guy I got it from doesnt know much about the motor. Was told it was ready to drop in and go, but ive got a pretty rough vibration at a certain RPM range. Found its likely due to a balancing issue. Its externally balanced and he put an unbalanced flywheel and harmonic balancer on. Now, ive got the correct flywheel on but im having trouble finding the right harmonic balancer, or hatchet weight. Looks like I'll be going for a hatchet weight and an unbalanced harmonic. The hatchet weight ive purchased, looks like the keyway is too small. Probably the 3/16". I believe i need a 1/4" keyway. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone know of a hatchet weight that has a 1/4" keyway thats right for this motor? Does the 1/4" keyway mean its an aftermarket crank? Is there a way that I can confirm the builder left it externally balanced? Pretty sure its still externally balanced but I'm tired of chasing my tail on the dang thing. Motor has been pulled 4 times, and throwing parts at it ain't the business.

All the Light Duty 460 passenger car & truck engines use a neutral-balanced harmonic balancer, so you don't need to change that.

The crank spacer, regardless of being just a sleeve (internal balance engine) or having the hatchet weight (external balance engine) uses the 3/16" keyway. The 1/4" keyway is only for the harmonic balancer specifically. The 3/16" keyway is located on the snout as well, 180* around the snout from the 1/4" keyway. In order to change out the crank spacer, you need to remvove the harmonic balancer and then remove its 1/4" woodruff key so that it doesn't interfere with the swapping of the spacers. Pay special attention to the installation of the new hatchet weight spacer and that it doesn't distort/damage the timing cover seal.

Ford 460 marine engines and parts are plentiful; we build them regularly and you are welcome to call directly with any further questions.
