Adjusting the lifters with it running, forgive me for all of you who swear by it, is a total backwoods, bailing wire and duct tape way of doing things. You did it the correct way. You'll never go wrong doing it the way you did it. Sounds like you have a problem with your lifters. I'm gonna ask a stupid question. Is there enough oil and oil pressure? What weight oil are you using? Are you using guideplates without hardened pushrods? I saw a 351W lose the lifters after the owner put off getting hardened pushrods. The metal was so fine it destroyed the lifters internally and they would not pump up. Just a thought. It was a comp cam and lifter set.
