I haven't been on the site for a while. Been busy at work. See if you guys could help me out...........

I have a 351w for my '69 fastback. It's got RPM heads a Victor Jr., 750dp(proform main), Comp Xtreme 235/245 @ .050 .570/.576(been a long time sice install, but the #'s are close), C4 w/4000 9.5 inch stall and 4.10's. I know it doesn't sound too streetable. I haven't put the motor back in since the upgrade, but I was thinking about a mild Performer RPM build on a 460 w/budget heads(ported D0VE's stock valves) and flat tops. If I put in a C6 and 3.50's out back, would I equal or better the perfomance of the windsor?

Would the cost of the install be worth the performance gain(if any)?

Thanks guys!!!!

351W vs. 460

If you don't mind putting in the time for the swap, I think you will find the 460 (even on a budget build) quite satisfying. With those heads, the right cam & carb combo it could prove to be a good neck snapper. Plus there's nothing like popping the hood on an early 'stang and seing it stuffed with the "Big Horse" However you end up,good luck...

Although I agree with the post below the 351W has alot of potential, Stroke that bad boy to 427 CID , and an upgrade to Victor JR Heads would make a world of differance over a stock stroke windsor.. and the budget stroker 351W isnt bad either, 393, you can retain the stock rods, use 289/302 KB flat tops (or dish) and buy a scat 3.85" stroker crank, this is a cheap and effective way to add cubes, Im not against a 460 at all, I cut my teeth on the 302/351W's and have a soft spot for thier potential..

I myself am putting together a pretty stout 460 for a fox body, I could have went with a 351W but I decided to give the big dog the lime light for awhile..

in an case you cant go wrong, if you ask me anyhow... GL!

I wholeheartedly agree, I too got a great start with the 289 & 351W. When you get to strking that windsor there is hundreds of ponies in the pasture, and torque to spare. Again which way you go is totally up to you & your pocket book. Good Luck & "Hammer Down"

I just did a budget 460 in my Maverick. st bore D9 block. Eagle SIR rods, KB hyper flat top pistons, ported C8 heads stock valves, Edelbrock RPM cam and intake, 750 vacuum carb. c4 trans with 3000 B&M converter, 456 gear ran traction limited mid 7's near 100mph in 1/8 mile. Have about $1000 in the motor and trans. Even with a 3.50 gear I think you could drive to the track and run low 12's. Sale of your heads and intake would just about buy all the parts you need to do it.

Hey bro,

I put a 460 into a 1970 Cougar, bout the same thing as your fastback. Few things you might want to consider. You will need heavier duty springs, and a aftermarket sway bar, unless you only plan on going in a straight line. Also, you will want to cut your driveshaft shorter to drop the 460 in there farther and you want to get it as low as you can. Buy a kit from Crites or another store that sells them. Welding your own mounts and fabricating everthing takes too much time, unless you wanted to go to a motor plate, but that's a lot of expense. You want to get the motor back as far as possible, because if you don't, you will be running into radiator-fan clearance problems, which can be fixed, but it's better to get the motor farther back and as far down as possible. (for steering and cg). Hope this helps. You guys rock! Dave

The 460 will have dramatically more low end torque. A friend of mine has a 69 mustang with a 351 stroked to 408, 244 dur cam, 4 speed, it's a fast car but does not have the low end torque of my 460. Built equally the 460 will win every time, and that 460 torque will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.
