I've done one or two, what cha got?

 

I have a 99 F250 V10 4x4. The transmission slips going into drive and howls in drive and overdrive. It doesnt seem to slip going into overdrive. Truck new to me, not sure of mileage or maintenance. There are no good tranny shops close by.

 

could have an issues in the accum body, direct clutch pack...or both. Pull the pan, if its full of black friction material its coming out.

The noise is it all the time its in d or over d? change with load?

 

The noise gets louder when load levels out. Less noise on acceleration, and even less noise when decelerating. Noise is there the whole time it is in D and OD. The day before the howling started, I was coming back from a 130 mile round trip (non stop). It was around midnight, very little traffic. I was in a group of vehicles running an average of 85-90mph. When I reached my exit ramp I was slowing down and as I reached 20mph I felt a vibration, as if I was running on top of the warning bumps along side the highway. As I pulled away from the stoplight the vibration came back at around 20-30 mph. I pulled over checked the driveshafts for play, they were good. Pulled out again, stayed under 45mph all the way home. No more vibration. Vibration is completely gone, but the howling and slipping is there. Sorry for the long post, Thanks

 

Sorry to be the one to give the bad news but you will have to do the same thing as I just did to my truck. I pulled and re-built the tranny (change coil pack also this is a must for this tranny) and I also purchased a new converter. When the tranny guy pulls the clutches out you will have issues with the high gear clutch pack and overdrive. After mine was re-built I just thought I had over drive before now I can tell a big difference. Before I never really felt overdrive it was going into overdrive and torque converter lock-up at the same time. Now all is good and crisp swaping cogs!!!!

 

Thanks guys. I had a feeling this was going to be painful. I am going to contact the dealers for a price. Do you know if the weak points of the 99 4r100 have been corrected in the new ones? I would have it rebuilt but I am having troubles finding an affordable shop that does quality work. I know you get what you pay for but the average strong built tranny is around $3500. I am considering a used unit until I can afford a better option. Is there a difference in the 99 4r100's? Will any interchange as in 5.4, 6.8, 7.3? Manual or electric transfer case? Sorry for so many questions.

 

Can you pull the trans out/in and have it down for a bit? I have a buddy in CT that builds E4OD/4R100 for tons of lightning guys making 700+ rwhp with no problems. I'm not sure exactly what he gets but you would have to ship it there/back (unless you pay for a core then he can build it and ship it there for you to do the swap).
