Spitting fuel out carb

Hi,
Need some help now.
My car has been off the road for the last 18 months for some upgrades to brakes, battery and fuel system etc.
Before starting up I have replaced the oil,oil filter, fitted a new coil, dizzy cap, rotor, plug leads.
I had to remove the dizzy to fill the oil as the valve cover breathers are baffled.

The car was driven into the garage and was fine up to that point.
The car now turns over fine but wont start, then shoots a flame and atomised fuel back out of the carb.

The engine is a 0.060" over stock 79TE crate motor, apart from a Comp Cams Magnum cam, some mild porting work on the heads and a Mallory dizzy (all done by previous owner).

Thought I may be 180* out on the timing.

I have removed the valve cover and checked No1 valves are both closed.
Timing mark on balancer is on 0*, dizzy installed with rotor pointing to No1 lead post.
All vacuum ports on the carb/manifold spacers are capped off.
Haven't got a timing light on it yet as I can't get it to tick over.

If I rotate the dizzy anti-clockwise until the vac unit hits the thermostat housing the motor will start and run at 2000RPM and the headers will start glowing red after 45 seconds!

Firing order is correct and leads are to the correct cylinder.

The plugs are wet fouled- greasy wet smells of fuel.

I'm sure the timing is correct.

The carbs are new Edelbrock Performers 600CFM.

The fuel system is running at 6psi on a bypass regulator.

Any ideas what to look at next?

I think you have the distributor in one tooth off - so you can't rotate far enough to get in the proper timing range.

Had another go this evening.
Set mark on balancer to 10*BTDC, dropped dizzy in one tooth back from where I had it originally.
Put it all back together and it started first flick of the key.
Thanks for the suggestion above.
Couldn't see why it would make any difference as rotation the dizzy body would have the same effect.
But something changed and it now works.
