Finally took my '64 Galaxie XL (466, maybe 475 horsepower, C/6, 3.70 traction lok) to the strip Saturday, 1/8 mile with super sticky starting line. On the fourth pass I did a burn out, went to the starting line, foot braked it, 3000 rpm, let off the brake, bang broke the rear end. 9" Ford in a cut down F150 housing, rebuilt by a professional, new gears, rebuilt trac lok, 31 spline mosier axles, 295/55/15 ET Streets with 28 lbs of air in them. Haven't took it apart yet, maybe tomorrow. The case and housing still intact, no leaks, but the housing has a distinct imprint of the ring gear, about 5 teeth. The rear end is off the ground, can rotate the wheels forward both at once, but not reverse, trans in neutral, any thoughts?

Anyway, I'm not messing around any more. Looking in the Jegs book and they offer a Strange S-series complete nodular Trak Lock third member, no horsepower rating, for $1210 and a Currie 9+ Sportsman complete nodular Trac Loc third member, rated up to 650 horsepower for $1260. I sure don't care about the $50 difference SO which one is the best??? It's a street car, maybe 6 or 8 races a year. I will be taking my 'box' full of parts back to the builder, lol.
Thanks.

Problem with the 9" is the stock run of the mill stuff is not very strong. I'd bet you had a regular gray iron center housing and std pinion bearing support.

The HP factory stuff used Nodular iron center housing and the daytona pinion support that has larger bearings. I'd say either will be fine on the street. Moser makes nice stuff too.

I'd go with a detroit locker as a lot stronger than a Traction loc unless you intend to drive a lot in the rain or bad weather. The "soft lockers" are fairly well behavied, but you cannot power out of a turn with a locker as it will lock and push you straight. Is no big deal once you know how to drive with one, but just have to be aware.

Since there is no leaks , i'd be thinking the cast bearing cap or caps have let go

For what the Sportsman case is there's not much more in it to go to the 9+ Race case. A good pinion support and billet 1350 yoke . As for carrier i'd be looking at Detroit , either Locker or TrueTrac
I've used both 9+ and Strange parts with no issues

I had the same problem with the stock 9 inch pumpkins. I broke 3 before I finally upgraded to a Strange built 3rd member with the pro case. If I were you I'd just skip the S series case and go right for the pro unit. It isn't that much more money and it will handle future upgrades if you ever plan on putting down more power. I've been very happy with mine. It is now bullet proof.

Personaly I perfer the Strange Pro Iron setup with the daytona pinion carrier. Its just that I've had two of them in different Mustangs and had no problems. Then too I always used 35 spline axles. I know its more money but only a coupla hundred bucks and this grenaded one already cost ya more not counting time and being POed. Its a no brainer to me, but just my opinion tho.
